TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK FIELD FAQ’S What is Social Work Field Education? Field Education consists of supervised field learning within a social work agency and a classroom seminar taught by a Faculty Liaison. Field Placement provides students hands-on, real-life social work experiences. In the final semester of the BSW program, students complete 32 hours per week in the agency setting for a total of 480 hours under the supervision of an agency-based Field Instructor. Field Seminar provides opportunities to discuss placement experiences with other students and to help students integrate theory and practice. Students attend a two-hour seminar each week and complete Field Journals and other written assignments. What are the eligibility requirements to enter field? Students will be a senior social work major in the last semester of course work, and have passed the following social work courses: • Introduction to Social Work • Professional Communication • Human Behavior and the Social Environment I • Human Behavior and the Social Environment II • Ethics in Social Work • Issues in Social Welfare Policy • Generalist Practice with Individuals • Generalist Practice with Groups and Families • Generalist Practice with Communities and Organizations • Research Methods Students must have a 2.25 overall GPA with grades of C or better in all social work courses and a cumulative social work GPA of 2.5, and have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the social work faculty that their communication skills, knowledge, ethics, and value base are consistent with the requirements to enter field education. How is Field graded? Performance in Field Education is evaluated by the Faculty Liaison, and is based on the student’s performance in the field agency and the completion of assignments in Field Seminar. Field Seminar is a writing intensive course with online assignments and Field Journals. Students are evaluated on their use of peer supervision and supervision with their Field Instructor.
