Take a look at www.skillsforsecurity.org.uk Skills for Security again sponsored the Security Excellence Award for Best Training Initiative, this year won by the HBOS in-house security team. I also recently had the pleasure of hosting the Skills for Security national conferences in Belfast and Hendon where we announced our own awards for contribution to skills development, which were won by Senate Training (England & Wales) and Risk Management Solutions (Northern Ireland). Both conferences were well received by our delegates, offering an interesting variety of speakers covering subjects as diverse as biometrics, corporate responsibility, CViT and 21CN–details can be found later in this magazine. Our training development team has been hard at work during the summer reshaping the Basic Job Training programmes to reflect the new modular specification required by the SIA, while our qualifications team have been liaising with the Awarding Bodies to ensure that the related qualifications will be available on time. The revised BJT packs will be despatched to existing customers automatically in January through our annual licensing process. If your company doesn’t participate in this scheme and you would like to know more please contact We have set up a vacancy notification service that employers in the Guarding sector can use to fill vacancies in Kent, South East London and East Sussex. Details of the vacancy will be forwarded to an agency which is able to provide licensed security staff in those areas. The service is funded by Jobcentre Plus and is therefore completely free of charge. If this pilot proves to be successful we will extend it into other regions. To notify vacancies visit For the Systems sector we have created a new Technical Training Centre in Birmingham. The Centre delivers training to young people who are apprenticed in the security or fire systems sectors, supplementing the field training they receive in the workplace - full details are inside. At the other end of the learning scale, we are proud to have brokered an association between Buckingham New University and the University of Worcester that will enable security practitioners to enrol on a Foundation Degree in Security Management with Bucks, and progress through to a full Masters degree in Leadership & Management with Worcester. The programmes are designed for people in full time jobs, and they therefore focus on distance learning with on-line tutor support. Details can be obtained from either university. And these are only some of the achievements of your Skills Body over the past few months. Further information is contained inside and on our new website. Happy reading! 06 12 15 As I promised in the last edition, there’s been no slow down in the development of new products and services at Security House during the summer. info@skillsforsecurity.org.uk for details. www.guardingrecruit.co.uk
